Google Glass Helping Autistic Children See Emotion

Autistic Children

Autistic Children

One of the most common issues of autistic children is the inability to place facial expressions with emotions. Autism glass is an experimental gadget that is designed to analyze recorded faces in real time. It comes up with the emotions those faces express. This device has been helping people with the neurological disorder on an experimental level in overcoming interaction issues.

Stanford Study

The facial recognition program used by this device was developed at Stanford University. This software is compatible with Google Glass. Google glass is equipped with a front facing camera that records the faces and the alerts appear on the screen.

The experimental study at Stanford includes about 100 children. The aim of this study is to analyze the results of the use of autism glass in helping autistic children build their ability to analyze facial expressions. Since autistic children are mostly associated with hesitation to make eye contact, this innovation is being considered encouraging for them to have face to face conversations.

These children are allowed to wear this device three times for 20 minutes sessions. These sessions include their interaction with their family members, playing games and having meals. The program is connected to smartphones that record the reactions.

This program cannot be expected to analyze beyond the apparent expressions since it doesn’t read minds. However, as it analyses the expression and detects signs of a certain mood like ‘happy, or ‘sad’, the Autism Glass causes a word ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ to appear on the screen. It can also be made to show the corresponding emojis on the display of the device. With these features, the Autism Glass tests the child’s ability to recognize expressions.

Usually, autistic children are taught to read and understand facial expressions with the use of flashcards. Therapists show them flash cards with pictures of clear facial expressions and allow them to figure out what they show. Autism Glass once developed will be very convenient for such children as they can grow comfortable in it.

Google Glass Is Helping

Glass has been introduced into the market not too long ago. Its function offers in the simplest words is providing a wearable device that does what you tell it to. It is like spectacles with a screen to the right side that gets activated when you look slightly up. The screen involves a quiet simple interface.  It allows you to swipe left or right in order to access features and history of search and camera usage.

Positive Step

This research is a positive step in helping the growing number of individuals who are suffering from this condition. Seeing the enthusiasm, Google has given the helping hand to this research by sending off about 35 units of Google Glass to Stanford.

It is safe to say that even though the Google Glass introductory limited editions have failed to gain the public eye and popularity that such innovation was expected to rise to, it has become exceedingly popular in the medical field. In addition to Autism Glass, the wearable technology is being seen as a very powerful tool in opening new fields of app development.
