If you would like to keep an eye on the data usage on your phone it would do you good to write the figures down at the end of every month or week or whenever your billing period ends. Also at the end of this period you need to subtract the numbers to arrive at the figures you hit during that time. If that sounds like a drag, because it is, you should get ReStats on your iPhone.
Well the whole problem is that while iOS caters to users’ needs to measure and manage their data usage by providing some statistics you need to ‘calculate’ them for a specific time period manually. ReStats is a jailbreak tweak which automatically resets those statistics on your phone after a pre-defined time. You can use it to reset the figures on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and it would be done automatically.
After you have installed ReStats you can configure it to your needs by going to the native Settings app in your phone. There you will see the option to set the duration of the cycle so that the statistics for the data you use are only recorded for the period of time according to which you are billed by your carrier. Once you are done with that you will have to choose an initial reset date. This will reset the stats on the chosen date and the new date will be calculated using it. Save your settings by tapping the Save button and you are set.
This is a pretty great tweak I think as it is really useful and easy to use. It completely makes a mundane kind of activity that you would need to develop a habit for automatic. The only trouble of course is that it is a jailbreak tweak and if you want to get it you will need to jailbreak your iPhone. Some people are apprehensive about jailbreaking so they will have to continue resetting usage data manually. I guess what I am trying to express is the exasperation with the question that why don’t manufacturers put such features into the phone already so I don’t need to jailbreak my phone to get them.
ReStats is available on Cydia’s BigBoss repository if you decide to get it please share your experience.
You should also check out SnapStats which is a very cool app which details the stats of your device.
